{"id":2782,"date":"2026-06-30T20:43:32","date_gmt":"2026-07-01T03:43:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pnwumc.org\/pnwac\/?p=2782"},"modified":"2026-06-30T22:45:48","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T05:45:48","slug":"pnw-conference-secretarys-report-on-pnwac26","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pnwumc.org\/pnwac\/pnw-conference-secretarys-report-on-pnwac26\/","title":{"rendered":"PNW Conference Secretary&#8217;s Report on #PNWAC26"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"padding:56.25% 0 0 0;position:relative;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/1205972809?badge=0&amp;autopause=0&amp;player_id=0&amp;app_id=58479\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;\" title=\"PNW Conference Secretary's Report on #PNWAC26\"><\/iframe><\/div><script src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/api\/player.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transcript<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Immersed in great worship and preaching, along with fellowship and collegiality, we embraced the theme of Love Boldly, both for the days and work that called us together in the moment, and for the year and seasons ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together, we passed the expected legislation for the usual housekeeping work of approving advance specials, minimum clergy compensation, disability benefits, and the like. We endorsed the <em>Season of Creation<\/em> for September worship, and we initiated a conversation about <em>Reimagining Apportionments. <\/em>Ironically, in an effort to save money and to apportion fewer dollars to the local congregations, we failed to pass a 2027 budget, which will require all the costs of having a special session to do the budget work. Meanwhile, we are grateful to the Board of Pensions for their significant financial contributions toward offsetting the costs of ministry in the local church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">True discipleship is often costly, and we pray about the costs we are willing to bear. To care for creation, we paid for reusable tableware at meals. To make the conference accessible to more of us, we employed translation services, broadcasting services, and meeting and voting platforms for larger audiences. Creation Care and Accessibility are two of our values and priorities we put into practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We acknowledged the land on which we gathered, both locally and across our PNW connection, and the Spokane tribes as the traditional stewards of this land. We engaged in truth-telling about the Methodist church\u2019s role in harming our indigenous siblings in times past, our efforts to repent of those harms, and the beginnings of the work of repair. The SLAM trips engaged in by students in the Yakama Nation area are profoundly beneficial. Thank you to our young people for leading us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along with caring for indigenous siblings, we extended care to those in need of disaster relief from wildfires and floods, to immigrants who need advocacy and legal aid, to LGBTQIA+ individuals who need allies, and other neighbors through funding for justice work done by the <em>Church Council of Greater Seattle<\/em>, promoting the work of <em>Justice for Our Neighbors<\/em>, and approving <em>No Hate in WA State<\/em> with a statement against the legislation coming to the Washington state legislature this fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We rejoiced in the formation of New Connections UMC, the merger of four congregations on the Washington-Idaho border. We lamented the closing of the churches in Aberdeen and the Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle. We mourned the passing of beloved clergy and laity who have gone to glory. We honored lay and clergy colleagues who retired, and we wish them well in their next endeavors, grateful they will remain nearby so that our friendships may endure. It was a pleasure to celebrate Bruce Galvin\u2019s 51 years of service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also released three District Superintendents from that work, giving them grace to move to new ministries. In their places step 8 additional Superintendents, making a team of 11 to shepherd clergy and churches in their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With great joy, we celebrated 30 years since the creation of the Order of Deacons, and 70 years of full clergy rights for women. We added to their number by ordaining 5, commissioning 1, licensing 1 for the first time, and over the past 3 years, certifying 42+ Lay Servants!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The laity elected a new Associate Conference Lay Leader. Congratulations to Sophia Agtarap. And the laity and clergy of the conference each elected a slate of delegates to General Conference, Jurisdictional Conference, and the 1<sup>st<\/sup> US Regional Conference. Congratulations to team leader, Lay person Julia Frisbie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since there are still vacancies in the nominations report, interested laity and clergy are welcome to offer their gifts of ministry for use across the PNW Conference, and to raise up others from their local congregations who have gifts to share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So many churches are engaged in amazing ministries. Often, these ministries are assisted by funding through grants and financial gifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Faith Foundation Northwest gave (6) financial awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peace with Justice and the United Women in Faith together gave (7) grants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Environmental Stewardship work provided more than grants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ministry Opportunity Fund made (11) grants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Accessibility Committee awarded (6) badges for improved accessibility in local church buildings and attitudes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">United Methodist Communications awarded (4) #BeUMC awards, celebrating outstanding service by<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clergy person Pam Brokaw<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Laywoman Carolyn Stimbert of Port Angeles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Garden Street UMC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shelton UMC.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The One Matters award was given to Blaine Memorial UMC for having a significant number of baptisms and confessions of faith for its size of congregation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We had some challenging conversations during our three days, conversations that exposed our diversity of opinions and needs. Conversations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>About the US military presence in the Philippines,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>About state laws that are hateful toward LGBTQIA+ people<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>About which ministries to fund and how<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>About trusting people to do the work with which they are charged<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>About the ideal place to hold future annual conferences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a series of those difficult conversations, Bishop Cedrick invited us to consider what we will leave behind, what we will share with others, and what we will take with us to our work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bishop Muyombo reminded us that the relationships we form can have profound and lasting blessings for us. Reflecting on his foster family in Idaho, and his theological education and ministry, we are encouraged to draw on those strengths as we move into a future of loving boldly, serving joyfully, and leading courageously.
