It’s the Wednesday after Holy Week. If you’re a pastor or worship leader, you might be just emerging from your post-Easter comas to start planning worship for this Sunday. You’re in luck—it is Earth Day Sunday, and there are many resources available that connect with themes of resurrection and new life as Easter people. Here’s a short list:
- Creation Justice Ministries‘ Earth Day Resources: This year’s theme is “Water, Holy Water”. It explores water as a gift from God that is being threatened by overuse and pollution. Included are sermon starters, worship resources, and a bulletin insert.
- GreenFaith’s Divest and Reinvest Now Resources: GreenFaith has Bible study resources, sermon tips, and more on the global religious movement to divest from fossil fuel companies.
- Earth Ministry’s Worship Aids: A wonderful, ecumenical collection of sermons, hymns, prayers and more.
If none of this rings your bell and you’re planning to stick with the lectionary, you might consider preaching on John 20:19-31 and reflecting on the ways in which God’s love for the creation is reflected in God’s incarnation in this world, and how the creation is a tangible, physical demonstration of God’s love.
