A European Proposal for Peace In and With Iraq
Thursday, April 3, 2008, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
University Temple United Methodist Church,
1415 NE 43rd Street, University District, Seattle
Hans von Sponeck, former Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations, served the UN for 30 years. In 2000, in protest of the Economic Sanctions, he resigned his post as UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq. Since that time, he has worked continuously to bring peace and justice to the Iraqi people. He comes to Seattle to present the Plan for Peace that has been circulating in Europe and will now be told in the Northwest. Hans will be joined by a UNA-Seattle-sponsored group that will report on the current situation of Iraqi refugees in Syria.
No admission fee will be charged for this program, but a free-will offering will be collected to cover costs. Sponsors are United Nations Association Metropolitan Seattle, Interfaith Network of Concern for the People of Iraq and Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility. All persons are welcome to attend.

New Appointment
Bishop Paup has announced his intention to appoint Rev. David Gillespie to the position of Director of New Ministry Development, a new staff position of the Office of Connectional Ministries, Pacific Northwest Conference. A search committee, comprising members of the Board of Congregational Development, Commission on Ethnic Ministries and Connectional Table conducted a national search for candidates, and recommended Rev. Gillespie for the position. David will work closely with Kristina Gonzalez, who has shepherded the development and implementation of the Comprehensive Plan for Congregational Renewal and New Ministry Development. Kristina's role will expand to encompass leadership development for our diverse and changing ministry environments. The Board of Congregational Development funded the new position in order to raise the level of commitment of the Pacific Northwest Conference to make disciples of Jesus Christ through new faith community development.

Celebrating Our United Methodist Heritage
The General Commission on Archives and History of the United Methodist Church has a wonderful web site full of useful information. Churches looking to celebrate their heritage can find a planning guide to help them get started, as well as information on sources for historical information. To access this information go to http://www.gcah.org/ and click on Resources. There are other sections offering all types of historical information that you might find useful, including, Annual Conference Archives, listing their commission members and the research contact person, as well as Archives Leaflets, with how to preservation tips. I have found the wealth of information contained in this web site to be very helpful and I would encourage everyone to take a look! Rev. The General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church voted this morning to name Bishop Edward Paup their next General Secretary effective September 1, 2008. The Pacific Northwest Conference Committee on the Episcopacy is proud to affirm Bishop Paup in this new leadership role for our denomination. While there will be a tremendous sense of loss to us here in the Pacific Northwest Conference, the Alaska Missionary Conference and the Western Jurisdiction of the UMC, we celebrate the gifts and graces that Bishop Paup will bring to this important global ministry of the church.

The Western Jurisdictional Conference will be held July 16- 19 in Portland, Oregon at which time we will learn which bishop will be assigned to our conference, effective September 1, 2008.
