Cargo Container 2008
Last year the Hope For the Children of Africa intended to send one cargo container to the DRC. Because of the generous donations from our PNW Conference we sent two and we still had some left over! Mike and Terrie Hobbs have kindly committed to coordinating the shipping of another container this Spring. We have urgent needs: 1. Donations - the cost of shipping a container is nearly $20,000. (If each church could send $50, we'd have most of what we need.) 2. Volunteers to help with sorting, packing, loading. 3. A staging location
Please help us spread the word to your churches. Contact Terrie & Mike Hobbs at miketerriehobbs@gmail.com to volunteer.
Soon we will have complete information posted on our website: www.hopeforthechildrenofafrica.com .
Automatic External Defibrillators (AED's)
Is your church considering the need for an AED in the local setting? Are you wondering about their cost? Would your church consider buying one if the price were reduced through the efforts of a group purchase? Please contact Brant Henshaw at bhenshaw@pnwumc.org or 800-755-7710 x307 with the name of our church, the number of units you would consider purchasing? And any other pertinent information you deem important. This does not obligate you to any purchase, but will give us an idea of how many we might be able to order to see about a reduced rate and who is interested

A Message from Bishop Hoshibata
My mother, Violet Teruko Hoshibata, died on Thursday night, January 31, 2008. After several days of gradual decline, her breathing stopped very quietly without much fanfare. It was gentle and very much in keeping with the way she would have wanted it. My mother was very much at peace with the fact that her illness was terminal and that death was imminent.
A high school English teacher by profession, she believed in the importance of higher education and lifelong learning. She was an ardent supporter of the University of Hawaii's Medical School and so in accordance with her wishes, her body has been given to the Medical School for research.
Although we at first believed our mother would have more time with us, we accept that she is now encompassed in God's love and peace and that she is reunited with her loved ones, especially our father, who have preceded her. We rejoice with hope in the eternal message of the Life Abundant made known to us in Christ Jesus.
We have been uplifted by many expressions of support. My brother John joins Greta and me in expressing our heartfelt appreciation to you for your messages of love and for your prayers.
Received from the UMConnector, Oregon Conference
Condolences for Bishop Hosibata & Family
Condolences may be sent to Bishop Hoshibata at the United Methodist Church Center, 1505 SW 18th Ave., Portland, OR 97201-2599.
